Excellence in Sustainable Construction Program is Launched
The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) represents more than 700 construction companies in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. The Association has launched the Excellence in Sustainable Construction Certification Program to help its members operate in more sustainable ways. The VRCA has chosen to use Gobi’s carbonsoftware as a mandatory component of this program. Lisa Wolfe, Associate Director of Education at the VRCA, provides her perspective on why the Association is working with its members to be more sustainable.

What is the Excellence in Sustainable Construction Certification Program?
The program is designed to help contractors and suppliers manage, report, and improve their business practices as they relate to social, environmental and economic sustainability. Construction companies will get tools and expertise that will help benchmark accomplishments and chart a course to improve performance. It goes beyond what some companies may think is sustainable, such as a waste management program.

Case Study: Greater Vancouver Community Services Society
Greater Vancouver Community Services Society is a non-profit agency that provides home support services and community living services in Vancouver, Richmond and North Vancouver.
Laura Johnson, HR and Operations Officer at GVCSS, provides her perspectives on why the agency is measuring and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
|
|
Why has GVCSS decided to track and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions?
At GVCSS, we believe that being an ethical organization means being environmentally responsible. While we have taken action to decrease our impact on the environment, such as adopting a paperless technology (CellTrak) in our Home Support program, we decided to track and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in order to further improve our efforts. Tracking emissions with GobiSoft gives us the metrics we need to see where we stand in terms of our environmental impact and where we can make improvements.

GobiSOFT Upgrade Coming Soon
An updated version of GobiSOFT will be available in early December. The new version will include several new features:
Data Export – you’ll now be able to export all your data to a complete GHG Report in Excel. The report will include your GHG inventory and methodology, as well as all your raw data. This will let you back up your data on your own computer and do further analysis in Excel if desired. You can also have the report verified by a third party GHG inventory verifier.
Data Import – you’ll be able to import your activity data directly into GobiSOFT rather than using Gobi’s data entry system. In this release, the data import is done one emissions source at a time.
Reduction Calculator – this new tool will let you easily compare the energy, GHG and cost savings between different years and for specific emissions sources.
Coefficient Update – we’ve also done our annual update of all emissions coefficients – ensuring that your GHG inventory is based on the most recent and accurate data available. |
